Female Rufous Hummingbird

I photographed this Female Rufous Hummingbird on October 18, 2012 in the Mead Garden Butterfly Garden, Winter Park, Florida. A few days earlier I was sitting on a bench in the Butterfly Garden beside Paul Hueber and he said “Listen.” Paul heard the sound of a Rufous Hummingbird. Wow!!! It was a Lifer for me and the beginning of a beautiful Autumn and Winter. I was there everyday Listening, Looking, observing, and photographing. I even put up and maintained a feeder for her. My Mother loved to garden and loved animals. I was going through the grief of my Mother’s Death a few months earlier. This little bird gave me comfort in a difficult time. A reason to care…. and continue…. I will never forget this wonderful bird. We had a wonderful five months together. A Rufous Hummingbird is a rare bird for Florida. They can be seen here in the Winter, I’m grateful she spent this particular Winter in Mead Garden!
